CHAPTER SIX

THE sense of peace and well-being was so profound that they must have been the lingering effects of a powerful dream, and Fay snuggled deeper into the bed, sleepily enjoying the warmth that wrapped around her so snugly as she mentally searched for remnants of the dream.

Instead of finding them, reality began to reclaim her, pulling her toward the dreaded start of another long, wearying day. In the next second, she identified the source of the uncommon warmth that cocooned her, and came fully and brutally awake.

Her eyes popped open to see that the bedside lamps were still on, and memories of the night before tumbled through her brain like colored chips in a kaleidoscope, arranging and rearranging bits and snatches of sights and sensations that sent fire over her skin from scalp to toes.

Fay abruptly bolted from the bed, throwing off a heavy arm and tangled covers then freezing two steps from the bed as she realized she was stark naked. A male chuckle from the bed behind her ignited a fireball of mortification.

Chase’s lazy greeting was low and rusty. “‘Mornin’, Miss Fay.”

Fay jerked her arms up to fold them over her breasts and turn partway toward the bed in a futile effort to cover herself and to remove the full on backside view Chase was getting. She felt the satin coolness of her discarded slip under her foot and dipped down gratefully to snatch it up. She sorted it out and dragged it over her head to yank it down so she was decently covered. By then Chase had risen to lean on one elbow and look on. He shook his head.

“That slip’s not worth the effort, darlin’. I’ve got too good a memory.”

Fay was practically vibrating with anger and the sexy smirk he was giving her made things worse. “Good for you. It’ll give you something to remember over the next sixty years.”

Chase feigned a disgruntled look. “Sixty?”

“At least!” she hissed before she turned and stalked to the bathroom, slamming the door hard enough to rattle a picture frame on the wall.
